Has Apple given up on Aperture?

I'm wondering if Apple has given up on their photo editing software. Lightroom 4 is clearly ahead of Aperture 3 in speed, usability and feature set. Google just purchased Nik Software. Apple has been silent on on a possible Aperture 4. Has anyone heard any different? Tell me I'm wrong.

I do believe that their entire Pro Apps team works on it a lot. Aperture 3 isn't that old from my understanding.

Lightroom is probably ahead of it sometimes, but Aperture with the right machine, does wonders. There's no other app I'd like to use. It has a ton of functionality that you don't always see at a glance.

Nik software on the other hand, is at the top of it all. Using Nik plugins in Aperture or Lightroom is a dream, and tops off their functionality, makes me wonder if there really is anything else Aperture actually needs.

Is there functionality in Aperture you need that it doesn't have?A3 is almost three years old since it's initial release. A4 may be just around the corner but Apple has made no mention of it anywhere.

While LR3 was comparable, LR4 has certainly taken the lead. I have used A3 for a couple years and recently started using LR. It is much faster and smoother. I have a top end iMac in all specs that is less than a year old and A3 is not that smooth on it.

I agree that Nik is amazing. I was kind of hoping Apple would snap them up and integrate their tech into Aperture.

I was thinking of an update now that I think of it. They usually carry out updates for a long time before releasing a full, new version. Aperture version 4 would be a landmark, they don't go willy nilly releasing new FULL releases like Microsoft with Windows, or Samsung with phones, lol.

Yeah, I'm glad that Aperture is at least INCLUDED in the plugin roster for Nik. Used to be scarce until they gained mass popularity.

Check out some rumor sites, they're correct 9 times out of 10
(AppleInsider.com) always throws out news about pro apps. I feel like I've heard SOMETHING recently about Aperture, probably an update like I said, but check it out and stay posted.

New Adobe Acrobat XI Is Now Available! Download a Free Trial Instantly
Two weeks after its official introduction, this morning Adobe released the Acrobat XI family– the 11th generation of the world’s most popular PDF creation and reading software.

The Adobe Reader XI is out as a free download in 27 different languages, while Acrobat XI Pro and Standard are now available for purchase or (if you’d like to try the product out first on your own system) free trial download.

Celebrating its 20th birthday next year, you may wonder what new could Adobe add to this industry-standard product line to make it work better and more effectively, and enable you get your work done faster, saving time and money?  The answer is, surprisingly, a lot…
What's New in Adobe Acrobat XI (Acrobat 11)?
Workers, whether in education, government, or commercial organizations, spend the majority of their time working with documents. As a result, enabling better efficiency with documents can have a significant impact. Even today with all our electronic communications, over 25% of the average workweek is wasted on documents-based challenges, according to IDC.
Some of the top frustrations from end-users in this area include time spent on searching through email attachments of various kinds, pulling together information that exists in different files together in one document, gathering and deciphering feedback, consolidating data from forms, getting important documents signed or protected, and other manual work associated with paper. If organizations were to address these areas and close the gap, it would be like hiring 21% more workers.
Let’s summarize how the new and improved Acrobat XI features align within the context of the four key challenges identified by IDC:
New feature in Acrobat XI: "real" PDF editing tools!
          User Productivity
          Collaboration
          Information Security
          Working Across Devices

Introducing the Adobe Acrobat XI Product Line
The line-up for Acrobat XI includes two new releases – Acrobat XI Pro and Standard.  Pricing for full and upgrade licenses is unchanged from Acrobat X. The family also includes two integrated services, FormsCentral and Echosign.

What’s the difference between the editions? See Acrobat XI Pro vs. Standard vs. Reader.

Note the Acrobat Suite is no longer featured within the family line – this product is not being offered for Acrobat XI.

Further, LiveCycle Designer will not be shipping with Acrobat XI – but don’t worry, because Adobe is offering LiveCycle Designer ES3 free for the asking once you upgrade to Acrobat XI, just so you can keep on using the programs you’re used to.

Acrobat XI Pro has also been added and included in the Creative Cloud for all paid members.

Free eBook on Printing in Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator & Acrobat

Free eBook on Printing in Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator & Acrobat

Adobe has just put out an excellent resource updated for CS6 – a free new printing handbook in the form of a 149-page downloadable e-book: The Adobe Creative Suite 6 Printing Guide. Earlier editions of this book have been out for previous releases (see the older CS5/CS5.5, CS4 and CS3 links below), but now this is fully refreshed and upgraded for the latest versions of the products.

Free Adobe CS6 Printing Guide - The Table of Contents
This very handy tome will tell you everything you ever need or wanted to know about getting great print results with your projects in Photoshop CS6 (including Extended), Illustrator CS6, InDesign CS6, and brand new Acrobat XI Pro. All the different tools, setups, settings, options, functions, and formats – what they mean and how to best use them to achieve your goals.
“The Adobe Creative Suite 6 Printing Guide will tell you everything you need to know to produce files that printers will love and published documents that clients will adore. Learn the best ways of handling and preparing CS6 files for print. Use it as a handy technical reference or as a training tool for new staff.” So anybody who would like a tutorial on how to print effectively and generate the most optimal output from their designs can gain something here…
Get the Adobe CS5/CS5.5 Printing Guide eBook (Previous Version)
Because some technologies and concepts – such as PDF creation, transparency, and the Graphics Model – are common across all Adobe products used for print design and production, the first chapter of a dozen pages is devoted solely to explaining common terminology and background resources. And with the groundwork laid, the rest goes into comprehensive detail on things you probably have wanted to know at some point but were afraid to ask or didn’t know where.

Creative Cloud News: Adobe Really Wants You to Subscribe

Creative Cloud News: Adobe Really Wants You to Subscribe

Yesterday Adobe released a major update for Adobe Muse, its web design program for creative pros that doesn’t require any coding knowledge. But when Adobe reps briefed me on the update last week, I was more interested in what they had to say about their road map for the Creative Cloud, the new subscription service that serves up online versions of the entire Creative Suite.

As I noted in my recent reviews of Creative Suite 6, the new subscription pricing is a powerful incentive for users who previously balked at upgrading their Adobe software. For $49.99 per month, you have access to fully functional online versions of all Creative Suite programs. An introductory offer that expires Aug. 31 makes it even cheaper: If you have any Creative Suite product (CS3 or newer), you can get the first year’s membership for just $29.99 per month. (The monthly fee applies if you agree to pay for an entire year, though you have the option to cancel within the first 30 days. You can also opt for a $75 month-to-month plan.)

Let’s put that pricing in perspective. For about $600 per year (or $360 with the introductory offer), you have access to the same software that’s in the $2,600 Master Collection, including the design, web and video apps. On top of this, you get Muse, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, Adobe Edge, Typekit web fonts, 20GB of online storage and several other services.

If it seemed hard to resist before, Adobe is making the subscription model even more attractive by giving its subscribers the first look at new features as they’re added to these programs. First in line is Illustrator, which is slated for an update later this month, followed in September by an update to Dreamweaver, with more to come later this fall and winter. These won’t be simple maintenance releases with bug fixes, but actual updates that add new features. Adobe has not yet revealed what these new features will be, except that Dreamweaver will get added HTML5 functionality.

The big question, of course, is whether the new features will be so compelling. In the past, Adobe has added features between major releases largely in response to new web standards, such as the free “HTML5 packs” for Dreamweaver and Illustrator in 2010. But when it unveiled its new subscription pricing, the company indicated that it plans to be more aggressive with these updates. It’s clear that Adobe sees the new model as a way to unshackle itself from the typical cycle of major releases every year or so. This fall’s updates to Illustrator and Dreamweaver should provide a strong clue as to what we can expect for Adobe’s other apps.
If you purchase a conventional software license, you’ll have to wait for the next major Creative Suite release and pay the normal upgrade fee. Adobe won’t reveal when Creative Suite 6.5 will come out, but if the company follows its usual pattern, we’re probably looking at the second or third quarter of 2013. You’ll still get maintenance updates via the automatic update feature, but not the new features.
I personally succumbed to temptation and became a Creative Cloud member last month. It’s a smooth process—once you sign in, you download the new Adobe Application Manager, which lists the available applications. To install an application, you just click on the “install” link next to its name. There are no serial numbers—instead, once a month, the software checks with Adobe to make sure you’ve paid up and then keeps on chugging. You can install the software on up to two computers (but you can’t run multiple versions simultaneously). You can deactivate the software if you want to reinstall it on a different computer.
A few other points from the briefing:
          • The 1.0 version of Adobe Edge, the company’s new web-animation program, will be released in September, re-branded as Edge Animate.
          • Also in September, Adobe will release the Digital Publishing Suite Single Edition, which will allow Creative Cloud subscribers to create one-off tablet apps for free.
          • The big news with Muse is the ability to create contact forms without embedding HTML code. The update also adds the ability to link to downloadable files, including PDF, ZIP, DMG and EXE. In addition, users can now place HTML5 animations produced in Adobe Edge. The update also adds some performance enhancements.

When, Where & How Will Photoshop Image Deblurring Be Available?

One year ago at their annual MAX conference, Adobe showed a sneak peak of some exciting work in progress: the prototype of a new Photoshop Image Deblurringfeature that takes shaky photos and brings them into focus. The demonstration was impressive and the technology received huge press at the time, but ultimately was said to be too early stage to make it into the final release of Photoshop CS6 this past spring.  Since that time, our readers have been asking about the status of the unblurring function – and when, where, and how we might see it finally released and available to the public.

Well now, we may finally have an answer.

Earlier this week as part of the Wall Street Journal’s Viewpoints West series, Adobe CEOShantanu Narayen gave a one-hour interview over a wide range of subjects including the changing media landscape, Steve Jobs, the U.S in the global economy, and much relating Adobe itself. Near the end of the sit-down session (at the 56:27 mark), he dropped a huge hint about what’s happening with Photoshop Image Deblurring:

Think about your next cool feature of Photoshop…  There is some magic that these people are working on. You can take a picture that was actually completely fuzzy – and they analyze the camera’s motion, and based on that they can actually sharpen the picture, including seeing text that was not clear.

And so what we will do, is that increasingly all of those things will be available through a cloud service – and only through a cloud service.

So we released Creative Cloud in May of this year, we said that subscriptions at our last earnings call were ahead of expectations, and what we found was that we can innovate at a much faster pace. So you talk about start-ups, small start-ups probably said, “hey we can just produce a new product every few months and Adobe has to deal with revenue recognition and all of that.”

And now, we have released new versions of Photoshop and Illustrator in weeks after they’re available. Apple comes out with a great Retina display, we have a new version of Photoshop that works on it.

So we think that the Cloud, over time, will be a great way.

So What Does This Mean for the Photoshop Image Deblur Feature?

Back at Adobe MAX, the nascent deblur function was in the form of a Photoshop plug-in. So clearly what Narayen is implying here is that this new capability is an optional one that would be accessible only for Creative Cloud members.  Adobe is increasingly adding more new programs and additional features to the Cloud in an effort to increase value for CC subscribers while keeping the price the same at US$19-$74/month, depending on customer type and membership term.
See All Eleven Adobe MAX Sneak Peek Videos
What’s perhaps surprising here is that deblurring might not be available at all to the traditional perpetual license holders of Creative Suite products, even when CS6.5 or CS7 come out.  Or another way of looking at it: Adobe offers a free level of membership for everyone with the Creative Cloud, so perhaps anybody who wants to use the new Photoshop plug-in would need to join to become a member, even at no charge.
Hopefully we’ll find out more about this soon – and we’ll be sure to keep you posted here – but in the meantime we have clear confirmation that Photoshop Image Deblurring is alive and well, and may be coming soon to (at least) a Cloud near you… Otherwise, the CEO simply wouldn’t be talking about this as he did.
[ Learn more about the unblur feature and how it works, or check out some amazing before-and-after photos of the technology in action. ]
What do you think – is automatic photograph deblurring an addition that interests you? Let us know in the comments below… And did you know you can already correct minor photographic blur today using the Sharpening tools in Photoshop?

Adobe Confirms Release Cycle for Creative Suite

Adobe has publicly confirmed what they’ve been hinting for a while now: a new annual release schedule for the Creative Suite – with milestone releases in even years, and mid-cycle releases in odd years.  The shift comes as the technology world turns faster from the previous cycles of 18-24 months historically.

Adobe didn’t actually say what future CS versions would be named or called – but for the sake of simplicity, let’s presume they continue with the established trend…

This means after CS5 in 2010, and CS5.5 in 2011, we could reasonably expect CS6 to be coming out in 2012, CS6.5 in 2013, CS7 in 2014, and so on.

They also gave guidance on “when” during each year, the expected timing for the launches… What’s more (and importantly), Adobe Photoshop will be getting a significant upgrade in CS6, after relatively minor updates for CS5.5.

          Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen
… We successfully launched Creative Suite 5.5, an update to the CS5 product family. The release features enhancements for mobile content and application creation, new innovations for HTML5 and Flash authoring, and amazing new features and productivity improvements in our video authoring solutions.
CS5.5 is the first release in our transition to an annual release cycle, enabling us to deliver content creation innovations to our customers more frequently in response to the rapidly evolving marketplace.
Looking forward, expect this type of innovation to continue. We intend to ship the next milestone release of Creative Suite in 2012, and it will include an updated version of Photoshop.
Okay – that’s very good to know, helps reduce on the guessing – but when exactly next year will CS6 (or whatever the next major version of Creative Suite is called) be planned?
          Question
As far as the annual release cycles for CS, should we expect that the timing is going to be kind of consistent during one time of the year – like we’ll see CS every year in the April-May timeframe, or will it be kind of variable each year?
          Adobe CEO
With annual releases, we’re still very focused right now on 5.5 and … continuing to drive through that cycle until we release the next version. But I think it is fair to say that when we go to an annual release, the cadence will be about the same quarter because that’s what really enables us even with enterprises to get to be far more of an annual release cycle and have maintenance be a more meaningful part of the business.
          Question
As you move to more of an annual cycle, will we see a condensation of when the languages roll out?
          Adobe CEO
Yes, so as we did with CS5 itself, we are moving to a more consistent release schedule where all major languages are released at the same time. The reality is, we’re in a global world and so the day we announced the product, the interest – whether it’s in North America, whether it’s in another part of the world – is consistent. So yes, expect to see us do simultaneous releases of all major languages moving forward.
So, since CS5 came out in spring 2010, and CS5.5 in spring 2011 – basically this signals we’re looking at CS6 being launched in the spring of 2012, in English and other major languages at once.  Here’s how the big picture looks:
          CS ReleaseDate
          Creative Suite 3Spring 2007
          Creative Suite 4Fall 2008
          Creative Suite 5Spring 2010
          Creative Suite 5.5May 2011
          Creative Suite 6Mid-2012
          Creative Suite 6.5Mid-2013 (est.)
          Creative Suite 7Mid-2014 (est.)
          Creative Suite 7.5Mid-2015 (est.)
But what’s this about a new release of Photoshop, features for the next version – what’s going to be in Photoshop CS6?
          Adobe CEO
And I think people are looking forward … to the next release as well, because there’s a significant anticipation that’s being built up for all the cool things that we can do in imaging with Photoshop – and there’s a lot of exciting stuff underway.

Bottom line, knowing the future release schedule takes a lot of uncertainty out of the process… There’s always another release coming at some point, but now we know when. Historically, there have been folks who have held off buying Adobe software because they weren’t sure if that next version was “right around the corner” – where they would feel sheepish if they purchased just before that event. But now, knowing the release windows, you know what to expect – and can make an educated and informed purchase. We commend Adobe for changing their policy and making this information more public.
